[Internal Explosion in Russia… “Beautiful Reports Are Ruining the War”]

“The Russian military is lying to Putin.” As the Lyman front line faltered, an internal explosion finally erupted inside Russia. Pro-Russian military bloggers have openly begun criticizing the Russian military's practice of producing so-called "beautiful reports," revealing that battlefield defeats and retreats are being disguised as "victories" as they move up the chain of command. The problem is that these false reports of victory do not end merely as propaganda. A bizarre situation has unfolded where distorted battlefield realities yield faulty orders, which in turn lead to further defeats, all while Putin remains convinced that Russian forces are steadily advancing. The claims regarding the Lyman sector stand out as a prime example of such fraudulent reporting. What warrants immediate attention in this Lyman crisis is not the advance distance of the Ukrainian military, but rather the exposures of internal "false reporting" emerging directly from within the Russian military.

On September 9, quoting Russian military bloggers, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted, “The situation on the Lyman front line is progressively deteriorating for Russian forces, with claims emerging that troops were forced to withdraw from certain forward positions.” ISW further highlighted criticism from a Russian military blogger who pointed out that “despite Ukrainian counterattacks continuing for months, Russian military leadership reported a vastly more optimistic battlefield situation to higher authorities.”

In Russia, the satirical expression used to mock these fraudulent and exaggerated situation reports is "beautiful reports." Reporting a defeat brings accountability, whereas reporting an advance earns praise. Consequently, while forces are pushed back on the ground, they appear to advance on situation maps, turning uncaptured villages into areas under Russian control on paper.

[Fire Support Blocked… False Reports Prevent Artillery Strikes Even When Ukrainian Troops Are Spotted]

Even more shocking is that these lies actively sabotage actual Russian military operations. Suppose the Russian military reports to upper management that a specific area has already been captured. Even if Ukrainian forces remain present, requesting artillery strikes or airstrikes on that position becomes nearly impossible. Requesting an attack on a zone previously declared secured forces commanders to self-admit that their earlier capture reports were false.

neighboring units face even greater hazards. If an adjacent unit advances assuming its flank is secure based on claims that a neighboring area was taken, only to encounter entrenched Ukrainian forces, its attacking elements and supply lines are exposed immediately. Russian military bloggers themselves warned that these false reports distort fire support and operational planning for adjacent units, ultimately inviting larger operational failures.

Consequently, a self-destructive loop of "Defeat → Cover-up → False Capture Report → Faulty Operations → Additional Defeat" has taken root within the Russian military.

[Even Putin Was Fooled… Ukrainian Commander Appears in "Captured" City]

A decisive scene exposed just how far up these "beautiful reports" reached. On September 1, Putin personally claimed that Russian forces had secured Sviatohirsk in Donetsk Oblast. Merely six days later, on September 7, Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, commander of Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps, appeared directly in the heart of downtown Sviatohirsk.

Filming a video on-site, Biletsky stated that Russian forces were absent and that Sviatohirsk was effectively in the "rear area" of the 3rd Army Corps. ISW similarly noted that it "found no evidence that Russian forces captured the city," adding that "even pro-Russian military bloggers acknowledged Ukrainian control over the city."

Analysis revealed that even the video footage presented by the Russian side as proof of capture consisted of recycled past footage. The victory announcement Putin delivered to the world was dismantled by a single field video from a Ukrainian commander.

[Meanwhile, the Russian Salient Was Disappearing on the Actual Front Line]

While Putin was proclaiming victory, the exact opposite was occurring on the northern Lyman front. On September 11, quoting Russian military bloggers, ISW reported that "widespread Ukrainian counterattacks forced Russian troops to shift to defense north of Lyman." A Russian source claimed that "Ukrainian forces effectively eliminated the Russian salient in northern Lyman and pushed Russian troops back toward the Zherebets River near Ivaniivka and Terny."

This Ukrainian counteroffensive did not begin abruptly. OSW had already analyzed on September 1 that Ukrainian forces executed counterattacks north of Lyman while simultaneously using drones to sever supply lines, forcing Russian troops to withdraw from several areas. Although estimates vary significantly depending on the source, it is clear that substantial areas previously held or influenced by Russia have contracted. However, ISW cautiously assessed that confirming the precise reclaimed acreage or the total elimination of the Russian salient remains difficult based solely on open-source data.

[Russia’s Carefully Cultivated Northern Slavyansk Encirclement Axis Shaken]

The retreat north of Lyman represents more than the loss of a few villages. The Russian military sought to expand this salient through Sviatohirsk toward Slavyansk, pressuring Ukraine's vital Donbas "fortress belt" from the north and northeast. However, the Ukrainian counteroffensive severely disrupted this axis of approach.

ISW analyzed that the counterattacks around Lyman hinder Russian attempts to approach Slavyansk from the northeast, likely forcing heavier reliance on the eastern attack axis moving forward. Emil Kastehelmi of Finland's Black Bird Group similarly evaluated for Reuters that indications show Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps successfully severed the Russian salient near Lyman.

This does not imply a total collapse of the Russian military. Nevertheless, suffering a setback along the northern Slavyansk pressure axis—which required considerable manpower and time to establish—represents a significant operational loss for Russian forces.

[Why Times Insight — Which War is Putin Looking At?]

The core of the Lyman situation lies not in how many square kilometers Ukraine recaptured, but in whether the war Putin observes matches the war fought on the ground. Field commanders conceal defeats; senior officers inflate accomplishments. The resulting "beautiful reports" travel up through the military hierarchy to the Kremlin, leading the Commander-in-Chief to conclude that "the Russian military is advancing."

Sviatohirsk symbolically demonstrated this danger: Putin personally declared the capture of a city Russian troops did not control. A more critical issue is that such distorted situational awareness can impair Putin’s judgment regarding an end to the war. A leader who believes he is winning has no incentive to compromise, increasing the likelihood he will judge that continued fighting yields more territory and stronger bargaining leverage.

Thus, the Russian military's "beautiful reports" are not merely an internal corruption issue. If this vicious cycle—Defeat → Cover-up → Fake Victory Report → Putin's Misjudgment → Faulty Orders → Additional Defeat → False Report Again—continues, the Russian military's most dangerous adversary may not be the Ukrainian military alone. The "fake war" engineered and sent to the Kremlin is pulling Russia into a deeper quagmire.

If Putin has begun believing the war he wants to hear about rather than the war taking place, Russia's defeat may be unfolding on the Kremlin's situation screen long before it manifests on the battlefield.
